19 Apr Kaula + Maui | 03.16.19 | Aulani Resort & Spa | Lanikuhonua | The Manaola Wedding
Kaula + Maui are one of those couples whose love is undeniable! The way that Maui gazes at Kaula while she does just about anything is the cutest thing! Like most girls Kaula had been dreaming of her princess wedding since she was a little girl! However, instead of roses and chandeliers she wanted something more true to her—a Hawaiian Fairytale wedding designed completely by Manaola Yap, a local award-winning and internationally recognized designer. Almost every aspect of their day had it’s own underlying meaning and purpose. He made her dress and Maui’s shirt with a print that he hadn’t released to the public yet. He chose this print for them because of their love for the ocean. Their day began at the Aulani Resort & Spa where they got ready. We shot Maui getting dressed and when we asked if he needed anything else his answer was to just put all our focus on Kaula because this was her day! We thought it was so sweet and the perfect representation of the selfless love he has for her. Kaula was dressed by Manaola himself and looked absolutely stunning in her unique couture gown! She held a bouquet of gardenias with shell leis draped on her arm. From there we made our way to Lanikuhonua where their ceremony site was set. Her arch was a gorgeous piece hand built and shipped here by her older brother. They also chose to line the aisle with Pili grass, pili means to join or come together so it was the perfect representation of being wed. Their ceremony was full of culture beginning with conch shell blowing and chanting. Kaula’s mom walked her down the aisle and Maui stared at his bride to be with the biggest smile! They had a very special ceremony and ended with honoring Maui’s culture by being wrapped in a Tahitian tifaifai, or colorful quilt to represent unity, love, and respect. They kissed as husband and wife and walked back down the aisle hand in hand with huge smiles spread across their faces! We captured portraits with their bridal party who matched them in the same print in blue. After that it was time for couple portraits and the intense wind made for awesome dramatic photos! The reception site was absolutely beautiful with wooden tables adorned in Manaola table runners and koa bowls filled with florals. The favors were small bags by Manaola and everyone loved it. They walked in barefoot for their grand entrance and had their first dance to their favorite Hawaiian musician singing live. Kaula and her mom had the most heartwarming mother-daughter dance we have ever seen and no one could hold back the tears! She sat her mom down and began dancing a beautiful hula, her mom cried as she watched her beautiful daughter. Kaula then grabbed her moms hand and they finished dancing the rest of the song together, both with tears in their eyes. They enjoyed the rest of their reception with more Hawaiian musicians, speeches, and spending time with the people they love most!
